Can the game be played entirely *without* a keyboard and mouse?
Hey there o/

I've just discovered this game while researching voice-controlled games, and I have to say, I'm blown away by the concept here. It's incredibly cool! I've never been much of a WW2 buff, but being able to see the Canadian side of it certainly has my interest. Being able to do so on Linux is is the ganache on an already very tantalizing cake! But anyway, on to the actual question:

I've seen many people asking if the game can be played without voice commands, but my question's more the opposite: Is it possible to play the game entirely hands-free, with only your voice, without the use of third-party tools?

I ask because I'd love to play the game with my boyfriend, a WW2 buff and huge fan of strategy games in general, who has sadly recently developed rather severe repetitive strain injuries in his hands and shoulders and should be using a mouse and keyboard as little as possible, or preferably not at all. While we've been working to set up things like computer voice and gaze control through Talon, progress has been pretty slow.

Partway through writing this post I realized I probably should've looked up more gameplay videos first, and from that I realise the answer is probably no; it looks like the mouse is needed for things like unit placement and navigating the menus. However, I thought I'd finish writing it up anyway to bring awareness to this.

Games like this have a lot of potential for gamers with physical disabilities, especially with RSIs being so common among avid gamers. While I realise it's far too late to add such features in now, I hope you'll consider the idea of full voice control if you make another game like this in the future. Or if not that, possibly the ability for one of the co-op players to do the mousework for the other (like placing their units or navigating their menus), for situations like ours where only one of us can't use their hands?

Actually, while I'm on the topic, since you have all the voice recognition code already, have you considered adding voice control to Kaiju Wars? It works especially well for that type of turn-based, grid-based strategy game, as you can map grid tiles in a similar way to how they do so in chess, ie. "Move tank from F3 to D6, then fire at D8". The same can be done for unit action menus (or any other menus really) by numbering the options, ie. "Select G3" followed by "3" or "third". As an aside, I'll also note that Talon, a hands-free accessibility framework for computers in general, does have an API, although it's currently under heavy development and may not be suited for production use yet.

Anyway, sorry for the very long post, and thank you if you decided to read the whole thing! It's awesome to see such innovative strategy games around, especially from fellow Canadians! I also wanted to add a huge thanks for bringing the voice recognition to Linux in the end, I'll definitely be picking this game up for myself anyway!

Glad you like the idea! As the previous poster says, you do have to hold Spacebar (or rebind the key) to start a voice command. There are gameplay options for moving figurines automatically when give a report or spot an enemy. Menus are purely mouse controlled.

The advantages of voice controls for differently abled gamers is an interesting one. It's a bit too late to add them to Kaiju Wars, but will consider adding them to fully control menus to future games. Thanks for the suggestion!

Unfortunately, you have to press Spacebar to activate voice recognition and you have to use the mouse to manually move the figurines in accordance to their actual position (yes, you have t do this yourself on any difficulty above easy!)
The author of this thread has indicated that this post answers the original topic.

Oh, I also forgot there are no voice commands for requesting the enemy status specifically, though your troops will give info about them with their own status report:
"I'm doing X at xy, if in battle, I'm supported by Y and I see Z at x'y'"

Thank you both for your quick and helpful replies! Hopefully once we get Talon properly set up (mostly been dealing with third-party hardware issues) he'll be able to play fully hands-free, assuming nothing in the voice side of Talon's pipeline interferes with the game's voice capture.

And great to hear you'll consider voice control again for future games! It's sad how few are out there despite the tech having advanced so much to where it is today. And even without, it's awesome to see such cool games from a local indie dev! :)
