So I bought Flying Red Barrel

...close to four years ago. And now it's here.

FRB's an excellent shmup with a very fun and rewarding gameplay loop and a bunch of little branching outcomes depending on what you do as you play. It's easily my favorite game in the genre, and I hope that you'll appreciate it like I do.

It's worth mentioning that this is arguably the hardest game made by Orange_Juice; due to your actions affecting things in later stages, you have to beat each stage in one go. Whenever you beat a stage, it's then available to practice on as much as you like, but there are no shortcuts to getting there in the first place.

It can be daunting, but let me tell you: I was so terrible at the game when I first started Peat escaped me because I couldn't shoot him down fast enough, and I only barely beat Stage 1 before losing all my continues. And now I can 1cc the game on easy. And with all the different things to discover in the same stages, those times spent trying and trying again felt less like just going through the motions than your average arcade game. And the feeling of finally getting past a hurdle that had been holding you back for so long is wonderful. And it's so bright and cheery and fun to play... it's just such a special game.

Because of how fun it is to find out what happens if you try something new, I encourage you to experiment and work things through yourself as much as possible! A number of branches are quite obscure, though, so don't feel guilty asking if something really has you stuck. I'll leave you with two bits of advice:

Spend time in practice mode, and don't forget your rockets.

Is it good for getting into bullet hells? I wanna get into the genre and I also really love Marc.

If it's something that looks appealing to you and you have an attachment to the cast, then yeah! It's challenging, but the drive to see more of it helps push you through the overwhelming parts. And the rocket mechanic is very helpful in making bullet patterns far less terrifying.

Like I said, I started from pretty much zero and now can finish the whole thing with one credit, and I'm not the only one who kept trying until they could see everything. You got this!

Thanks for the words of encouragement! I've heard it's hard, but Flying Red Barrel is a game I wanted before there was a promise of a bonus character. I'll fight to clear the game on Normal or higher after my first victory!
