Turns out I'm also getting slowed down even when using keyboard controls. Is this really how this game handles just the regular shot? I highly doubt it...

If you hold Shoot you get slowed down. You can shoot continuously without auto-focus by tapping the Shoot button.

On a slightly unrelated note, the manual actually explained this, but since I couldn't access the manual in-game, I was wondering where I could get more info on the controls until I remembered that this was an old game, so the manual was probably bundled somewhere within the game files... I don't know if you guys can make it so that we can open the manual in-game somehow

I understand this is a common control scheme in many shoot-em-ups like the CAVE ones, but could you please implement the Touhou-style scheme where you hold a dedicated key/button to slow down (e.g. Shift?) Also this is the default scheme in QPD and Xmas Shooting Dangerous

Pressing Z repeatedly makes my fingers hurt and it's inconvenient to change between drastically different speed modes and fire using the same button.

try mouse click maybe?
