The main reason for this is that the kinds of power ups that persist over time deactivate based on the turns of the player who activated it. If they finish, they no longer will have another turn which muddles up how to despawn the power-up effects. Also, with something like the fire power-up, a player could make it literally impossible to get into the hole by activating the fire as they go in, unless other players happened to have a weight or ghost power up.

TBH, that is the whole point, it makes it much more fun if you can block them for 1 shot ;)
