I get these randomly so I keep a backup of my settings file. Use Steam to validate your files

I think you can delete the settings.lua and when you start a new game the game will create a new settings.lua and you will have to change the settings to the way you want them to be under settings.

I'am not technically minded at all but I had some problems with the settings.lua file when I tried to load the game through my graphics card interface (this was months if not years ago), I think I just restarted the game in steam the and the game just created a new 'default' settings.lua file. I've never tried to load the game through the graphics card interface since.
