One way to prevent this is to disable the automatic name

If your not talking about the system settings, yes i did, if not, theres no option to disable that, it is a bug.

It does happen sometimes with some stations that the game will replace the name with automatic. I have not see it happen every time though. Usually it happens when you add another platform nearby from a track built before the station, but can happen in other cases as well. So yes I think there is a minor bug but again have not seen it to be persistent.

As a solution of sorts, perhaps rebuild the station? Not sure how difficult this may be. Perhaps you can try by setting another station nearby (not connected to anything and separate from the original one) and just see if it also changes its name automatically. If it does not, then delete the old station and move the new one in its place.

When you have automatic names disabled (know only the way to do it for every station individually) but during rebuild delete the - I think - first track you built (the parent one if you started the station with double track) the manually given name goes with it.

Happening approximately on one save in two for me. I have a very large depot close to a station so maybe that is the cause. It is not possible to move either of them because I playing realistically.

Have you reduced your platform footprints to minimal (2 meters)?

Before footprint reductions became possible, I had an issue like this and for no better option just moved the depot 20 meters or so away. I am also playing realistically but sometimes you have to do what you have to do. With reduced footprints though, unless depot tracks are in between the station tracks, you can get away with moving them just about 1 meter typically.
