There are three different types of increased damage in this game.
- You have crits, which use you focus stat and will happen at all times, provided you either have 1000+ focus or roll well. Critical hits will have a small "critical" indicator to the left of the damage number.
- You have attribute advantage. Think of this like rock-paper-scissors or a pokemon type chart. Whenever you load into a stage, the type chart will be helpfully displayed on the top left, right of your health. Short version is red beats green which beats blue which beats red. Purple and orange both deal increased damage to each other. The numbers when you have attribute advantage will be LARGER and yellow.
- You have killer (i.e. race/species/association) advantage. These are directly displayed on your characters when you unlock their 6-star version. When you deal damage with killer advantage, the numbers flash with a RED BORDER.
As an example, you mentioned your True Shikai Ichigo which (if it's the newest version), is a Heart (purple) attribute unit with Soul Reaper affiliation. His attribute advantage will be against Mind (orange) units and his killer advantage is against other Soul Reaper and Stern Ritter characters.
Regarding the benefits of focus, crits deal a ton of damage and every point of focus above 1000 is ALMOST as good as gaining the same amount of attack AND spiritual pressure at the same time, so removing it will negatively impact your damage in a huge way. These items (Pupples and Yuki) are mostly a holdover from when the game was still new, as crits used to work differently and it used to be really difficult to get past 1000 focus. You CAN use improvement hammers to evolve them so they no longer zero out your focus stat, but that's only worth it if you lack other good accessories.
