Prices in Brutal difficulty
Just wanted to try my first campaign on brutal since I played Telepath tactics very well, but I'm finding the prices of everything on Brutal to be just a little too much. Unless you only recruit the worst possible characters costing 200-300 each (which isn't even always possible, since there might only be 2-3 of them available to hire), then your salary is going to be 2000+ aura (every two weeks), leaving you with essentially zero money to buy food, healing items or more equipment, since weapons will break. And forget about armor, you literally cannot afford armor. And since each action takes a whole day, if you buy anything, you're also missing out on fighting that day and not making money.

And considering some hires have a salary of 700 or more, if you want even one or two good units at the start, it's possible to not even have enough money to hire 6 units which is the minimum requirement to start.

I think maybe either salaries should be lowered slightly, or I have an alternate suggestion below:

A different change could be that each even doesn't take up the whole day, but half the day, meaning you could shop, then fight, or fight twice a day for more money. However, if you do two actions in a day, your troops will be tired and lose 1 morale from exhaustion.

Hey Thaecrasis! Thanks for the feedback. I've been considering increasing the rewards from arena fights; you can expect a change on this front soon.

I do have a question, though: how far in are you? Have you beaten the Monkey League Qualifier? Beating the qualifiers gives you a pretty big cash infusion.

I only got to the second week (hadn't started the monkey league yet), but was finding finances too tight, so I started over on challenging difficulty instead.

I'll second that. The econ on brutal is brutal, even as a vet who finished the previous games on the hardest difficulty.

My weapons broke on some of my phys characters, but I don't have enough money to replace them, as I had purchased just enough food to make next payday. Moreover, you start losing money if rounds take too long (no time to regen energy), yet characters often don't regen on their own during rests. So my casters are nearly bottomed out as well.

Going to start another run on brutal, this time I won't make the mistake of selling off the practice quarterstaffs!

More rewards sounds good.

Bonuses (early finishes, multikills, pulling off interesting combos) could be an interesting mechanic. Do I stay to heal up/regen energy/collect loot, or entertain the crowd for more money?

Collecting loot is important, but perhaps the most important thing is simply to avoid hiring expensive units at the start, even if it means fielding a smaller-than-recommended team. (That said, I just realized that the game wasn't letting players do this anymore, so I'm pushing a hotfix to address that!)

Brutal is meant to be, well...brutal. It is not recommended for your first run even if you are very good at Telepath Tactics Liberated, as the economic and resource management side takes some getting used to.

Brutal econ definitely gets much easier past the first couple weeks. I'm on day 32 and I've finally been able to buy armor/weapons. Maybe hire another unit.

Are there any league matches past Monkey league atm? My calendar's completely empty except for paydays.

There should be--this is a reported bug that I'm investigating right now.
