He won't lose any stat gains from levels accumulated up to that point--but his stats will likely still change, as he'll lose the old class's base stat bonuses in favor of the new class's base stat bonuses.
(All of which is a fancy way to say: yeah, he'll probably lose some energy and gain some movement. 😅)
Edit - ended up upgrading the mechanic even though he himself wanted to be an archer. Got really close before any opportunity to go to the trainer. Ye, should have agreed to make him archer, these advanced classes aren't bad, but I mostly needed movement speed which as an archer he would get anyway.
