So many issues - please help
It's a black screen with the character and overlay option that I can find, the settings seem inaccessible somewhere off screen, and I can't switch to any other programs when this one is running.

Okay, yeah. So, I would ensure that you have the 3d setting in nvidia control panel to the top of the 3 bubble options for letting the application control the settings. The lower two override application-based, so even if you have a profile for this game with the antisailing options off, it seems to still screw with the program, causing black screen. Maybe this will help - let us know.
