Dragon Quest games have never been known for their musical variety. Whether that's because of budget, or Sugiyama preferred it that way.....I dunno. But it is what it is.

There's a couple mods out there that add music from older games, though they do have their own issues (audio balance and loop points mainly, plus some tracks being synth instead of orchestral), Still that's an option if you want more variety.

I'm generally against mods that fundamentally alter a game in any way. I'm a Dragon Quest newcomer. Looks like it's something that I'll just have to get used to.

The composer was stubborn with the license I guess. But yeah these game needed more soundtracks. There's even old tracks of old games that never got re-used or orchestrated and you can listen to them on Tickington areas.

oh I forgot to mention that this composer is dead so things may change in the future.

If you did research on mafia-like copyright laws, you might run into entities like the MPAA and RIAA. Two groups which, imo, are much bigger threats to internet freedom than any government entity is.

Let's just say, the late DQ composer himself is on the other side of this debate. Whatever the Japanese equivalent is.

Plus, unlike the west, Japanese law enforcement actually persecutes people for things like streaming anime, so you know it's just as bad if not worse there.

One of the unpopular things Koichi Sugiyama was known for is putting low quality music in his games and then pushing the high quality composed tracks on his compilation albums so you would go out and buy them. He did this to help fund his other scumbag ventures.

I'm getting the impression that he was an extremely talented composer and musician but kind of a scummy person.

Yup. I remember that. He expressed frustration with American political correctness. I think his attitude is representative of a lot of Japanese developers.
