Literal translation is not magically better than proper localization.

This game is pretty bad with the translations and choice of accents and language setting. But AI translations would probably be just as bad.

It's a grandfather in of how localizations were done in the 80's and 90's. You know, the jelly-fish donut days. DQ would receive way more faithful translations if the series was 20 years older. Assuming real-life political commentary isn't shoehorned in instead but that's a different conversation. Personally, I don't play Japanese games in English anymore for this reason.

Anyway, isn't there a mod that makes the translation more faithful or something?

Honestly it's so bizarre how this game was such a big hit with so horrible localisation.

There's a re-translation project mod on Nexus Mods so you may have to keep an eye on that. I may use this as some dialogue don't make sense like in Hotto with the people talking like if they came from a stupid old Kung Fu movie or if they watched Karate Kid and then thought that this is how the Japanese talk.

Yeah I saw it when I started playing, but apparently it's work in progress.

I might at some point download it since there's so much that they have changed that doesn't even make sense.

Then you have them changed to speak in "french", "spanish" and so forth accents when they don't even change the dialect in the japanese one. Like how the kid in the gondola village with his friend who can't talk speaks in broken english, but in japanese version he can talk just fine.

Such unneeded changes.

AI translations, sadly, won't be as bad due to the nature of the fact that it only translates, it doesn't insert their own liberties or god-forbid, political/ideological agenda.

I went and study Japanese for this. Wouldn't it be funny if AI translations become good enough that learning a new language becomes less of a necessity and more of a passion? I'm already fluent in 2 other languages too.

You know, there's a matter of expectations, we expect AI to be rough around the edges, but solid enough to understand the gist of what's going on.

What we don't expect is to be preached to with hamfisted in-our-face social commentary when we consume our entertainment.

This shouldn't be hard to understand, unless we're wrong for not expecting divisive social issues to be inserted into our escapism? Next you're gonna tell me you support the funding of USAID.

Hell, back before widespread translations existed, everyone really only had the choice of Japanese and English, except many cultures don't understand either. Taiwanese people like myself had to rely on the few kanji that appear in the Japanese text to sort of grasp what was going on, and of course the classic memorization of menus. I assume many older European gamers went thru the same thing. We survived.

Besides, I'm not the one affected by this. I already know the necessary languages by myself, so I don't really a need a translation anyway. Well, unless Korea starts making good games and anime and I can't read a word of Korean, but I'll deal with that if it ever gets there.

Yeah I can understand the spoken Japanese, but Kanjis are still difficult for me thus I play the game with English subtitles.

Since apparently the game uses Furigana I might as well change the subtitles to the Japanese.

Unfortunately, the actual Japanese version is a different version of this game.

Had to go in game and check. Why would they even do this? So cruel.

The one and only reason why they do this is so that they can disincentivize "reverse importing" from their Japanese audience.

So they can price gouge their products in their Japanese homeland.

The same product in Japan often costs more than it does in the rest of the world. And discounts and deals are more common outside of Japan than inside Japan as well.

If you ever bought a BD/DVD of an anime in the west, you might notice there's no way to turn the subs off if you switch to Japanese audio, same reason.
