I usually name him something similar (and funny) to his grandfather. Like Rabioli or something.
There is a small scene added in the S versions, showing the protags parents naming the protagonist. The father normally tries to suggest Erdrick, before the mom goes with the name you selected. If you named him Erdrick though, the dad instead suggests Rickerd (which is just Erdrick with the syllables swapped) before the same thing happens, mom decides on the name you went with.
As for that scene, in Japanese, it's Ton Nura, or Nura Ton, if you actually named yourself that
There's another conversation in Last Bastion after defeating the boss at Heliodor castle where the woman raising the orphaned baby decides to name him "<player name> Erdrick"
So I think the Luminary is implied to be the reincarnation of the legendary DQ hero Erdrick. But... Hendrick is also repeatedly called "the Hero" so maybe he's actually a reincarnation of Erdrick and the Luminary is something else entirely.
Also I'm already hating the translated names...
The only one that seems to remain intact is Veronica...
He even looks like Trunks had he kept the long hair, to be honest. And yes, we know it's done on purpose.
