Im new to dragon age quest so...
I wonder if I must best play the 1-3 rather than buying this one... Is each of the dragon age a follow up of those that came before or not ?

DQ III is a prequel to DQ and DQII so it goes 3,1,2.

DQ IV-VI are self contained stories but is debated that these take place in the same world as they share some locations so the order is not important.

The others are very stand alone although some people like to link IX to IV,V and VI.

X is an online game, not sure if the offline chibi version will get released outside of Japan.

That's... The LAST Dragon Quest you should play in chronological order. But I don't think it's a big think. Only 1 2 3 are directly related one each other, 4 5 6 are standalone stories, and DQIX connects 1 2 3 with 4 5 6 and 7.

i think it doesnt really matter its kind of like final fantasy, every game is story/character wise different. But the end plot is also kind of always the same. I would start with this one as for me is the best one, but if u want to start with another one first then i would go with 8 first

DQ 11 is very standalone, I know because this is the only one I played. And I love it.

However, the stinger after the ending of 11 implies that it is a very distant prequel to DQ 3. To the point where the story of 11 might as well be legend or myth relative to the timeline of 3 because it took place so long ago.

I don't recommend reading that spoiler if you haven't beaten this game. I know some people's trigger finger. I'm just saying that you should play this one, and it's absolutely alright to do so even if it's your first DQ, despite the XI in the title.
