How to despawn items on the ground?
They're starting to lag my game, and as far as I can tell they never despawn.

I have not tested it, but does it help to go in the caves so that the game has to load ... and go out after that. Are the items gone?
Other idea would be - since I think it will be a lot of wood (?): sell all your wood -> collect till full -> sell all your wood -> collect till full -> ... (repeat)

no the items never despan, just pick them up and sell them to an npc you dont only cleanning your map, you also getting paid for it
Would be much more convenient if there was just a despawn setting...

There's no npc that buys bamboo seeds though.
go to the ocean or the abyss in the caves. in the cave abyss build a bridge, place items you don't want and recycle the bridge. the item will fall into the abyss and disappear.
That process seems overly complicated just to get rid of items that you can't use or sell. Why not make a craftable bin or something similar? Like a "blackhole" bin you can craft from a few void essence and some metal? That or add a vendor you can sell trash drops to.
I posted this in another thread on this subject...

For items you just can't sell you could go into the tutorial dungeon and dump them in a corner.

They might despawn there. I haven't tested it, but I was in a dungeon and unable to pick up wood/stone/etc. from chests/barrels because I was full ... exited the dungeon and unloaded ... and when I returned found they had despawned.

But even if they don't despawn, they will be out of sight and mitigate any potential impact on FPS.

This is a strategy from the early days of Valheim (before they created the "obliterator"). Items around the player's base would not despawn and would tank performance. Using a nearby dungeon as a dump was a good alternative.
