Idle curiosity: Precursors + gigamass
If gigamass was soooo useful to the Precursors that, like me, there can never be enough of it, why are there any dead worlds to be had? My and every civ I've encountered are busy reducing dead worlds to gigamass as fast as possible. At this rate, in less than a decade there won't be a single dead world to be found anywhere found anywhere in the galaxy.

If the answer is that the current dead worlds had NOT been dead worlds during the time of the time of the Precursors, that would suggest that dead worlds would be chock full of Precursor goodies. (Which players are NOT allowed to seek out because the ONLY things we can do with them is reduce them to gigamass, or possibly convert them to Class 1-5 planets.) Alternatively, MANY inhabitable worlds may have been rendered dead due to the numerous empire wars over the millennia after the Precursors. But if that was the case, once again that implies that those worth destroying during those wars, and therefore chock full of valuable loot to be gleaned from the wreckage. (Also, very few dead worlds are described as being war-wracked. In fact, I only recall such descriptions as being for still-inhabitable worlds.)

I think, in game terms, "dead" worlds also include gas giants and other worlds incapable of bearing life or possess few resources that would make it worth one's time in harvesting them. Other than Gigamass, of course.
It is also plausible "dead" planets 'were' capable of supporting life prior to the precursor wars. Perhaps they are the product of terrible artifact weapons, similar to Terror stars, that transformed life bearing worlds into "dead" ones for the sole purpose of harvesting gigamass.

Kinda like a reverse version of transforming dead planets into a Class 5 planet with current tech.
The Precursors only used what they needed. Unlike the greedy warring factions that are currently inhabiting the galaxy. Everyone wants to control the galaxy and use any means necessary.

Also you could look at it like this: Gold has been mined on this planet for thousands of years, yet there is still a lot of mining going on any even more yet to be found. Gigamass should be the same way.

However, rendering a dead world down of its gigamass always reduces it to an asteroid field. (It very well could be that the existing asteroid fields at game start were dead worlds from which the Precursors harvested the gigamass.) There doesn't seem to be a "partially-harvested dead world" condition.

That's one thing I'd really like to be added to the game, from a gameplay point of view, a way to keep dead worlds around with zero gigamass on them once fully harvested instead of having them transformed into asteroid fields.

Sort of depends on just what part of a planet is where the gigamass is extracted. If it's the planet core, that would pretty well explain why the asteroid fields.
