Always great to talk with folks who have also used FaceRig in the past :)
It is not the first time Animaze has been used in university research PhD thesis on avatar-related aspects, and, if helpful, we know it is also being used commercially in emotional response training for first responders (like firefighters and such), and in regular education (avatar-teachers), this last part especially in the Asia-Pacific region.
Happy to confirm that you can also use the free one, as long as Animaze is credited as a tool in your research and you don't mind the limitations, most notable being
- (technical) the 30 fps cap on the virtual webcam output, (goes away on the Plus tier and above)
- (visual) the "Animaze free" watermark in the corner of the image, (goes away on the Plus tier and above)
- (legal) license type which is Creative Commons Attribution Non-Commercial-Share Alike 4.0 International (CC BY-NC-SA 4.0). (goes away on the Pro tier and above)
Worth noting that the above legal limitation goes away for the Pro tier (formerly known as VIP tier) or B2B tiers, should you choose to use that, is fully commercial, and you own the copyright to the visual materials created with it, with no limit of time or territory (even if your Animaze Pro sub-license lapses later, the videos you created with it while the license was in effect are yours forever as far as we are concerned).
The full legal terms are listed on the website, linked in the app, the Steam page.
Additionally, if you are open to outlining in a public article how Animaze is helpful/being used in your thesis, we are happy to provide you a free code to a Pro license.
All the best!
In addition, regarding the use of Facerig and Animaze software in dissertations, papers submitted, and even academic publications, I have already done so. In most cases, it will be written in the format of "The avatar images and animations used in this study are provided by Facerig".
Understood.
Yes Animaze Plus 23 DLC is a historical snapshot of Animaze as it was in 2023, it will remove all functional restrictions.
It is however exclusive to Steam and Is not guaranteed to gain new features past the year in its name, for instance, the upcoming Google Media Pipe tracking support will probably not be in it.
To get all the latest features in an ongoing fashion, you need to be on the live service/subscription version, not on the historical snapshots of the past years.
If so, then I do need to consider paying for the subscription system. But if possible, I hope you can tell me how the updates of technologies such as but not limited to Google Media Pipe tracking will improve the actual movement of avatars? Because of the payment method of research funds, it may be easier to buy a version that can be used forever than a subscription system.
