Yeah its true that this is another part about the game that has not been communicated well.
But I am happy about the point that there is a - up to date - demo of the game, that should give you more enough fodder to determin if the game is for you aka worth buying.
If you can spare the money you should seriously consider buying the game if you are already 40 hours deep into the demo.

Where is the more up to date demo?

There is no a "more up to date demo". There is only one version of the demo, which contains the whole base game except for half research tree blocked and the special missions are not available.

If you’ve played that much I’d definitely recommend getting the full game. The end of the tech tree and the special missions have a lot of fun content. Plus, you can field bigger squads if you want. I also feel like the difficulty is harder in the full version, though I have nothing to back this up.
