Questions On Heat
Love what I've played in my 14 hours so far, just a couple of questions regarding heat.

Reloading certain weapons causes massive heat build up and seems to be instantaneous and automatic.
Pertaining to this, should pilots not be able to control when they reload? For example if close to the overheat threshold, maybe they hold off reloading until its not in danger of causing a max temp shutdown. If they are under high stress, maybe they should pay less attention to heat, and go for a reload as quick as they can (thus still retaining a possible shutdown due to panic).

Secondly, do mechs gain more heat underwater than at an equivalent temperature on land? I only launched one underwater mission accidentally and quickly retreated due to lack of effect against the enemy, but I did notice the heat gauges were significantly higher at idle in that brief moment, an I imagining things or is heat worse underwater?

You cannot control when your mechs reload. This is a somewhat intended mechanic. What you can do is turn off your weapons in missions by clicking on them, maybe this helps.
But generally speaking, your either aim for a loadout with enough cooling / heat reduction that you dont get to overheat or pick the pilot perk that prevents damage from overheating and live with it. (Using only one ammo type, reducing the number of weapons (different weapons have different ammo usage) and / or reducing rate of fire can all help controlling the heat)

Water does not effect heating / cooling, only the ambient temperature does. Keep an eye on the temperature scale when selecting a mission.
Thanks for this - definitely clears things up. I was probably imagining the extra heat underwater, I was expecting it to pretty much remain ambient.

The first missions you usually (should) do are ice maps which have a temperature of -30°C, while water maps are somewhat warmer with 17°C (but have other features / risks as you will see).

For the hotter maps you definitely want better reactors, they help alot!

There are features later that allow you to gain SOME control of reloading. But it will only prevent pilots from reloading while over 85% heat. If this would still cause an overheat, you need better cooling installed.....or to not care about overheats.

That's cool, its sort of what I was alluding to in my original post about not reloading above a certain heat. I'm not heading south for a while though!
