Is the difficulty actually this spikey?
It feels like I'm missing a mechanic or the physics are working different for me or something like that. I didn't have any real trouble with the first few actual levels (once you get to the temple), but then many of the skin unlocks and some levels that still only have 2-3 skulls feel like they're legitimately impossible without being an actual expert at the game.

For example, the level "Crossroads" was no real trouble at all, except for getting the skin, which was literally random for me, as I just couldn't manage to get any consistency whatsoever with those long skinny platforms where several had weird random angles that send you flying in seemingly no predictable manner. I probably tried at least two dozen times before I managed to both get the skin and then make it back to the end of the level with it.

"Timeworn tablets" (a 2 skull level), took me maybe 3-4 tries to get gold on. But then "Deserted refuge" (only 3 skulls), I tried about 10 or so times without coming anywhere close to beating it, and the one time where I managed to go pretty much full-tilt and seemed to be doing good, I was solidly in bronze.

Necropolis, (only 2 skulls), was again, totally manageable, until attempting the secret. Which I legitimately do not see how it can possibly be done consistently even if someone was an expert. The tombstone angles are so wonky, and the margins so tight, it's a ridiculous step up in difficulty from the rest of the level. I've tried around two dozen times, and I've gotten to the tombstone where you turn the sharp corner to the right like 3 times *ever*.

Hopefully I'm just not understanding what the game wants me to do or something, so here's what I generally do:
Charge the double-jump. Jump and do a down slam (to get a free first jump), use my single jump and then glide, adding the double-jump if needed. (Of course, for jumps that need distance instead of height, I omit the down slam part since it kills your speed.)

And yet even with that, a lot of things just really don't seem realistically feasible unless you're a god gamer or get really lucky. To such a degree that I'm torn about equally between thinking it's just bad design, and thinking that there's got to just be something I'm missing.

All that said, I have enjoyed a lot of the game so far, but the apparent difficulty spikes have me very bewildered and frustrated.

It is just sort of a game you build skill at by going through. I had a ton of trouble with a secret (might even be Necropolis, it has been a while) and it took me a long time but I brute forced it. Then coming back at the end, I could do it easily first try. You just have to keep playing and get used to the physics and timing of it all. Even if you feel like you know all the mechanics, and you might, just getting used to the basics makes worlds of difference.

I'd recommend just moving on if a particular level is giving you a hard time, especially if you feel like you aren't having fun. I'm sure you will be gliding circles around the game soon.

Also, and I could be wrong since again it has been a while, I think if you double jump right before opening up your wings, you will get a lot more out of your glide.
