If you're into 2D Metroidvanias, I highly recommend Nine Sols. Definitely on the same quality level as P, great combat, probably some of the best out there, and an excellent story
Also, I'm playing The First Berserker: Khazan right now. The story is just mid typical anime revenge but I'm really enjoying the bosses and the combat. It's probably the hardest game I've ever played, if you're looking for a challenge it's an ok game
Nine sols is VEEERY good
It is still an amazing game and was easily GOTY 2023.
The Hotel Krat is an amazing hub area. not only does it interconnect the whole world so it feels like a real place you return to that is near the actual world you explore not just a teleport like in dark souls 3 for example, it ALSO is so comfortable. and it feels like home. the music is SUCH A VIBE. the npcs are charming and friendly. almost like family. we get a CAT to make our friend.
then that sorta design applies to the rest of the world. it maintains that amazing vibe with how it contrasts that comfortable home you start at with danger, chaos, and darkness. idk how to describe it.
the combats mix system is incredibly unique and allows a ton of experimentation and makes you feel special. while most souls games everyone typically gravitates towards 1-2 things and its all samey.
lastly it feels... complete. like maybe its cause its a singleplayer game fully. but the covenants and such in souls games make the games completion an absolute slog, and adds a lot of RNG to your experience that makes it less enjoyable as an *experience* Lies of P on the other hand feels refined around that singleplayer experience so I never feel fomo for say achievements or pvp rewards/spell exclusives etc. yknow?
idk it just feels like lies of P is one of the most definitive "souls like" games out there and nothing even comes close aside from the originals (which arent what im looking for as Ive played them all before a while ago)
also its mostly all just a vibe. the only place I didnt like was the puppet dumping site (poison swamp) it felt the most grey dark souls bland uninteresting area to me. almost everywhere else was awesome.
its insane because id easily pay full price for either of those games on steam. and im sure MANY people would.
(Or Twinkborne)
Agreed that Nioh has better combat (didn't like the equipment system, but the stances and styles felt really cool). Disagree about Elden Ring and level design, though. Lies of P's level design is about standard for the genre. Elden Ring didn't really do anything special with the areas and Legacy Dungeons because it didn't have to. It was open world, so the way the world was setup was more akin to Zelda. The side caves often had more exciting challenges than the actual main dungeons, which were essentially just zigzags to the boss room.
Much hype for Lies of P 2.
The writing is simple on the surface, but actually has great depth, and i'm hooked on this games world, i'm hoping that the sequel will answer some of the question, but also add even more mysteries to speculate on.
if they were on steam id have easily payed 100$ for the ultimate editions or whatever they do. but a whole console isnt the move.
same reason ill likely never play duskbloods. im simply not buying a switch 2 for it.
