Does this game have a presented story or is it like the souls series were everything is gathered in small bits by examine things or putting things together on your own?

Lies of P has a much more robust and present storyline than the DS series. A lot of the more incidental features like tangentially related characters which never appear in person and the more in-depth backstories are subject to a style similar to what you describe though, where the information has to be pieced together to some extent from scraps of writing and (albeit to a significantly lesser extent) item descriptions.

Overall, the main storyline is a solid retelling of Pinocchio that balances references to the original and game-specific features pretty well. The backstories about why the various supernatural things are happening are decent, but can at their core tend a little bit cliche. The story isn't the main draw though in my opinion. It's good, it's engaging as far as it goes, but it's not the primary focus of the game.

hmmm. Maybe ill wit till it gets a bit more cheaper then.
it has tangible story and npc questlines are a lot easier to follow and make logical sense.
aka its not vague and mysterious for the sake of it. your objectives are kinda clear cut, and the world around you while interesting is not impossibly vague or symbolic. its pretty tangible and grounded for the most part. and things tie together soundly.

It has both; same storytelling methods but actually has followthrough. There's a lot of subtext you'll miss if you aren't paying attention.
Both sort of, there's definitely more of a story in the traditional sense but also deeper lore for those interested
That's what bothered me with other DS games. Happy to say, this game is very direct with it's story delivery, upfornt and opened. That's why I liked it so much, the story was engaging and kept me motivated. It does huge difference.
