I was watching the trailer and when he hits his final shot they explode. is that a upgrade you get later in the game? i just started playing couple days ago and just beat Fallen Archbishop Andreus.

There is a DLC weapon which is basically an exploding sword and another weapon that's a sword with a built-in pistol in it. Could they be what you are referring to?

The fatal attack that does a stab then explosion is unique to the new Gunblade weapon

If you're talking about the elite enemy dismemberment it happens if you kill them with a fatal attack.

The weapon he's using there is the Twin Dragon Sword, it's a boss ergo weapon you have a chance to get later in the game (keyword: swamp).

The explosion is NOT unique to that weapon, though. Enemies will explode or dismember like that whenever they're finished off by certain attacks, like Fables or Fatals. What this guy said:
