However, there will be other ways to carry items around, in addition to the existing way that you've described, which is to just hold on to items while visiting other locations. So stay tuned for that! :)
After a quick attempt, I didn't seem to be able to reproduce the issue you were describing with the book. Picking up a book from a bookshelf, carrying it to a location that doesn't have one, and then reading it there, seems to work fine for me. If there will be other ways, that would just as good as inventories, so that's good to hear.
From what I remember, there was an insect-symbol speech bubble, so I thought that it might have been because there were bees around, but that seems unlikely.
I only tried that once, but I'll see if I can reproduce it and fill out the form if it happens.
