Should the Courtier be an elf if created in a human city/nation?
I just had a surprise when I moved my Courtier to an elven city and they were able to Recruit an Elven Warbear. It turns out they are an Elf! I created them in a human capital city where the king and heir were humans, and so just assumed the Courtier would also be human.

To double-check I reloaded the map from turn 1 and had a look at the nation. The capital city where I created the Courtier was definitely all human, but interestingly a Duchess in another local city was an elf. The Courtier spawned as her child. It's a very cosmopolitan nation; at turn 1 there was:
* 1 human King (the Courtier was created here)
* 2 human Dukes/Duchesses
* 1 elf Duchess (the Courtier's mother)
* 5 human Barons/Baronesses
* 2 elf Baronesses (the Courtier's sister and niece)

Is this a bug or is it normal for nations to be generated as mixed species and for an agent to be a different species to the ruler and heir in the location they are created?

Some nations are half elven, where humans and elves mingle freely.
Thank you, that's good to know. I'd never noticed it before. So in that case, does that mean other agents (Aristocrat, Cursed, Heirophant, Monarch, Plague Doctor, Trickster, and Warlock) can also be elves if you create them in a nation with elves?

I think only agents that are a part of a family (courtier and trickster) can get a variable race, everyone else is a fixed race (usually human but sometimes undead, orc, or elf).
Thanks crawlers, I hadn't realised that only Courtier and Trickster have family connections to other characters on the map. That makes sense then.

And yes, I'd been keeping a list of the agents' species. There's also "monster" (the Survivor, who the text describes as a frost giant.)

Cool, so then this issue doesn't seem like a bug. It sounds like it's intentional that there are mixed species nations, and if you create the Courtier or Trickster in one of those nations, they may spawn as an elf. I like it; it adds some quirkiness. :-)
(It would be cool if the agent portraits adjusted to match their species, but that might be asking for too much!)

Portrait adjusting for race might be useful for acolytes who do not currently do so.
