[1.0] Large elf nations are severely bottlenecked by their heroes
The only way they can acquire gold or replace rulers are through heroes, but the number they get does not ever increase based on their size. An elf nation with 1 settlement or 30 gets 1 wayfinder and 2 crystalsmiths, which is not necessarily sufficient and results in a lot of settlements being festering pits of unrest where the rulers get killed off and unrest gradually accumulates due to nearby unrest with no one who can reduce it.

I had this problem with my Dark Elven Empire even when they were just a handful of elven cities. The wayfinder often wanted to wander around attacking random heroes instead of doing Wayfinder Stuff, and when it came time to replace him, rulers didn't seem to make it much of a priority.

I think the situation is worse for dark elves since they get a huge motivation boost during war to fighting heroes called dark elven skirmishing. This accelerates their demise by getting them killed and/or making them too busy to perform their duties.
