Is it viable not to go for combos?
As an example, I really like the skill Pressure Point. The two combo options either turn it into a totally different skill (shooting needles) or a similar skill that also fears enemies. I don't like either of these effects.

Is there a third path where you just "advance" the base skill? Or are you pretty much forced to choose a combo?

you don't need to do a combo. obviously that will limit its viability for uber late game stuff, but you can get it done to HG8 no issues i'd say

there is also a mod where you can dual up basic skills, so they stay the same basic skill but you get double row for modifiers

Ah ok, I'd say the dual row setup is such a big deal that not going for combo is basically gimping yourself (even if it's technically possible to advance).

Good to know about the mod though!

ya it is definitely a disadvantage
some of the ideas for the mythic legendaries sound really cool, since it gives you a skill. so you'll be able to combo with skills you don't have access to as a different class, if you use that piece of gear.
should open up a ton of options
