Quick question re defaultSkillAnim= in Classes.xml
Hi. I tried creating a new character class in the Classes.xml. I used spriteSet= and defaultSkillAnim= from an existing class and everything works fine except that the attack animations don't occur in battle.

Are the defaultSkillAnim= options that a spriteSet can do (e.g. Cast, Shove, Stab) hard coded to the original name of each individual class?

Different sprite sets have different animations available to them--that bit is hard-coded, yeah. (Most of the psy classes, for example, have Cast but not Shove.)

It looks like it is hard coded to the original class name though. Is that correct? For example, if I simply change the name of, say, the Gasul class to be called Stonefist instead, and leave everything else in the Classes.xml exactly the same, the Gasul spriteSet will no longer animate for any attacks.

Off the top of my head, I suspect that might be because you're using the Gasul spriteset, which is pretty unique among non-Golem sprite sets in not having alternate male and female sprites. That bit might actually be hard-coded. Try it with, say, Barudit and let me know if that fixes it.
