Multiplayer issues, firewall errors and workarounds

I haven't played this game in years and recently bought someone a copy to play and for some reason we can't seem to connect to each other. we keep getting the firewall issues message after doing the UDPORT thing. can we do it over hamachi or something similar? i can't imagine that this isn't an already solved issue amongst the community

Some players state that the firewall message can be ignored after the udport steps are taken.
