Gold, Items, and Stats are all isolated within each respective game.
Some of the rules even change between the games hence while some tactics may function well between the sequels... some stat interactions will be very different in some cases.
All games in the Torchlight Series allow crafting. There are differences regarding Craft-Rules between the 3 games. Gems can be upgraded in the 1st yet only roll for a random Rare Gem in the 2nd. It appears the 3rd game uses Crafting for the player's home fort construction itself.
The 2nd game does allow earning lower difficulty achievements by completing the higher difficulty achievements... something not available in the 1st game. Uncertain how the 3rd handles that.
Single-player can join Multiplayer games and vice-versa - yes. Characters are not restricted by Single or Multi player sessions.
Keep in mind that connection to TL2 Multiplayer may be of some technical difficulty for some players due to ISP details. Port Forwarding / Lan / Radmin-likes may be required.
TL3 Multiplayer servers definitely have issues (it might actually be Single-player only in accessible reality).
TL1 doesn't have Multiplayer.
