Top Tier aRPG boss design way back in 2012! (Spoilers)
So I have been playing through TL2 again and I was surprised at how in depth and well designed the bosses are, even mini bosses. I always remembered how coo the bosses were, especially Act 2 final boss.

I especially appreciate them much more when I play on the hardest difficutly where you actually have try to space their attacks, pot properly, manage adds properly,...etc

Its funny that modern aRPGs player that only see the genre through POE and Diablo and POE2 has been praised for making the best aRPG bosses in the genre. Yet going back to TL2 the boss designs were very high quality will very clear mechanics, and animations.

Anyway just another TL2 appreciation post now that I have it fresh on my mind.

This is not my footage but here is a video ONLY consisting of the boss fights

Many of the devs who worked on this game were Blizzard North (Condor Games) alums. They were developers who helped build Diablo and Diablo 2 (and D2:LOD).

They were the devs who helped create the genre in the first place.

Oh I know that, but its still impressive give how old the game is.

I'm new to this game, I played the first one many years ago but so far the bosses all feel the same. Some kind of aoe attack and then a knockback ability. Maybe I'm just not paying attention. But one thing is for certain, the devs fell in love with knockback, it's virtually everywhere.

I mean you can get knockback resist through gems, gear,...etc making it a non issue, but early game yes many bosses/bigger enemies can knock you out of attack range pretty easily especially if you are melee.

I can't remember how easy the game is on lower difficulties but at leas on the last 2 difficulties (Elite is brutal) you have the engage with the boss mechanics, meaning you need proper spacing, you need to know when to back off, avoid AOEs,...etc. I'm not shaming you or anything but odds are if you don't need to pay attention to the bosses mechanics you are probably playing on a more chill difficulty level, or your build is just OP lol.

I just like them because for a 2012 aRPG they are very engaging, have great designs, great effects and I find figuring out the boss mechanics very fun. One example is the king of masks boss, that randomly changes elemental masks mid fight to do different attacks, that need different solutions to avoid, or the big ole stone golem mini-boss that pulls up the pillars that you need to learn to maneuver between, as well as dodging his slams or you will get chunked for 2/3rds of you're health ..etc.

Its not your usual face taking everything type of boss fights and that was what I was bringing attention to.

I hope you enjoy your time with the game, but if you want more of a challenge I would recommend at least Veteran Difficulty, as that will teach you real quick that you need to actually engage with the games mechanics to progress.

Once I learned there's no reward benefit for harder difficulties I put it on normal. I'm mostly playing for achievements. I've played Diablo 2 since the first month it launched, I've put so many hours into games like this that they don't hold my attention like they used to.

Ahh, well that is where we differ I play mostly all aRPGs and I play them for different reasons. Some I like to blast and turn my brain off and some I like hard more thoughtful experiences but the genre will always be my favorite out of all of them.

Good luck on those achievements though as they are pretty brutal from what I have heard and I;m still unlocking some with close to 300hrs in the game lol. I've long stopped caring about achievements personally, but to each their own ;)

You will have to defeat the game's endboss on Elite though for an achievement.

Yeah I read that you could play all the way up to that boss on a lower difficulty, then raise the difficulty for that fight and it would still count. So that's what I did and it worked.
