Controller enjoyability vs TL1?

How is the controller gameplay vs TL1? Torchlight I didn't have controller support but I felt it was very playable via the Steam Deck using community configs however everything I see for Torchlight II acts like either it is unplayable or "needs" controller mods. Personally I feel many mods can be a annoying on the Steam Deck to get working so just hoping a similar learning curve on TL2 compared to 1....which I am fine with.

Or should I just skip to 3 and call it a day?

It takes time and work to get the stuff needed for some kind of controller functionality.
Unless TL2 is played on the Consoles which is the easy way to solve this.
