Mod vs Vanilla?
Hello so what guys do you prefer?

Right now the only mods i've tested have been pretty much visual mods like recolors, hud replacements.

Whats the advantage and disadvantage with playing mod and vanilla.

And could you guys recommend some mods that would be fun playing. Note im not really looking for mods that change the entire game like synergies :crate:

Never used any mods, myself. I like it as is. Np with this or, that not working, losing data, nothing. Just plain TL2.

hmm ok.

I run "Blanks Landmarks" and "Chunky" mods, both authored by Runic staff. They add new areas like camps in the Overworld, expand some dungeons in the various Acts, and new content to Mapworks, They do not alter gameplay. Also, I used the Runic "Respec V3" mod to try different builds without starting over. Oh, and the BigBag mod because I am a bit of a hoarder and wanted to keep odd, or Legendary items, without using all my stash space.

Am I able to play online with people not using any mods with those installed?
MageThis 26 May, 2013 @ 12:11pm
Yes, and No. You can launch the game vanilla and play with people not using any mods. You may also launch with the mods. The save and mod save folders are separate.

So for example. My level 1 hardcore with mods wont exist if i launch the game without mods?
MageThis 26 May, 2013 @ 12:26pm
If you launch the game vanilla it will load the toon in your save folder. If you launch the game with the mod launcher it will load the toon from your mod save folder. So your lvl 1 hardcore will still exist in the mod save folder but it won't load in the vanilla game because vanilla loads the toon that is in your save folder. The two folders are separate and don't interact.
What most people do is backup their save folder then copy the contents of the save folder into the mod save folder. Do not copy the contents of the mod save folder back into the save folder because there could be potential problems.
So, you would have duped your vanilla toon when you copied the save folder into the mod save folder. Now you may play mod mp or single player by using the mod launcher button. You will still be able to play vanilla mp or single because the save folder still contains the unmodded toon.

Blah ok ^.^ Ill stick to unmodded then so I can play with friends when I want : )

you can play online with friends with mods as well, you just have to have the same set of mods active. You can disable/enable mods as needed to meet that. If you run "mod unbinder" (in the workshop) it can help disable some mods which may bind to your save to make disabling easier. It is easier to play online unmodded since you don't have to match mods though.

One thing to note if you do disable mods: some items may be mod dependent and if you disable the mod you may loose items (ie. disabling an inventory extending mod will make you loose any items on extended pages). If working with mods I HIGHLY recommend making a backup folder for your save data (found in mydocuments/mygames/runic games/torchlight 2/mod save), particularly so whenever you intend to fiddle with your mods so if something does screw up, you can just restore your character. There are some mods that also just don't work with multiplayer due to how they mess with the save data, even when disabled (ie. level cap alteration mods, item slots past a certain number etc).

Same here. I've put over 150 hours into the vanilla game, and only a few hours into the mod side. I don't like, on the mod side, how you have to use the exact same mods you use when you create the character, so you end up creating and deleting a lot of characters before finding a set of mods you like. Vanilla just never fails me, and I really enjoy playing multiplayer with friends and anyone else - you can't do that in the modded version lol because everyone you play with has to have the exact same mods which is one in a million for a game.

Vanilla. I play other games for SP and the modded lobbies in TL2 have fewer MP games for me to join. No contest.

No Synergies? Boo.
