Am I able to play online with people not using any mods with those installed?
What most people do is backup their save folder then copy the contents of the save folder into the mod save folder. Do not copy the contents of the mod save folder back into the save folder because there could be potential problems.
So, you would have duped your vanilla toon when you copied the save folder into the mod save folder. Now you may play mod mp or single player by using the mod launcher button. You will still be able to play vanilla mp or single because the save folder still contains the unmodded toon.
One thing to note if you do disable mods: some items may be mod dependent and if you disable the mod you may loose items (ie. disabling an inventory extending mod will make you loose any items on extended pages). If working with mods I HIGHLY recommend making a backup folder for your save data (found in mydocuments/mygames/runic games/torchlight 2/mod save), particularly so whenever you intend to fiddle with your mods so if something does screw up, you can just restore your character. There are some mods that also just don't work with multiplayer due to how they mess with the save data, even when disabled (ie. level cap alteration mods, item slots past a certain number etc).
Same here. I've put over 150 hours into the vanilla game, and only a few hours into the mod side. I don't like, on the mod side, how you have to use the exact same mods you use when you create the character, so you end up creating and deleting a lot of characters before finding a set of mods you like. Vanilla just never fails me, and I really enjoy playing multiplayer with friends and anyone else - you can't do that in the modded version lol because everyone you play with has to have the exact same mods which is one in a million for a game.
