How to exit a level and return to world map?

I feel like an idiot for asking this, but I don't see a way to exit a level and return to the world map. I'm past the point where I can fast-travel around the world, but I'm stuck in a level that spans multiple screens and I see no way to leave without solving a very difficult puzzle or completely backtracking all the way to the beginning of the level.

My options seem to be:
* Song: Rewind: Takes me to the edge of this area in the level. I can go right to the other area, or left to where I'm stuck.
* Song: Eagle: Doesn't seem to do anything within a level
* Escape Menu: Exit: Exits the game.
* Escape Menu: Restart Level. Takes me to the edge of one area of the level. Doesn't actually take me to the very beginning of the level (where I presume a door would be to exit).
* Escape Menu: Back Arrow: Just takes me back to where I am in the level.

Is there really no way to just "go back to the world map right now and try a different level"?

The eagle song (short short LONG short short LONG) when used next to a checkpoint, will take you to the world map and you can fly to any landing beacon you have visited previously.
