2 Ships At Once?

I started the game today and suddenly I have a Red ship fighting alongside me, mimicking all of my moves. I'm effectively controlling it, but it's position is unpredictably offset from mine, and when it dies I do as well, making this game suddenly extremely difficult. I didn't do anything that would suggest I would have a second ship, nor a second controller plugged in. I'm using a PS4 DS4.

Can someone help me with this?

a little known feature of this game was the drop-in local co-op. i believe it spawns a 2nd ship if it thinks it detects another 360 controller pressing A (yes 360 controller thats how old the game is). my only theory right now is that some input it doesnt understand from the newer hardware is being misinterpreted as that.

if it thinks it detects that same nonexistent 2nd controller pressing B the ship should go away. though how to do that is anyone's guess.

if all else fails there is always keyboard and mouse. not ideal but it's an option.
