BSOD with creative soundcard (ctaud2k.sys) (SOLVED)
So, completely out of the blue my pc BSOD's due to creative's drivers. This is a very old problem for me and i have fixed it for numerous games, but now it seems this one is back making a mess for this game specifically.

As you may or may not know, creative isn't known for their awesome drivers, as with a ton of games, this little driver makes everything die out in a blue screen of death. The reason for this, i do not know, but i had this problem with killing floor as well and that game uses .ogg as a music source as well.

Not really sure how to fix it in this specific case but worth mentioning nonetheless.

It seems that you just solved my problem with the game.
I have a Soundblaster too, but my PC restarts instead of showing a blue screen.
I will try to remove the soundcard and switch to the onboard one, so let´s see if this helps.

Btw., the support is working hard to make this game playable and to remove all the bugs.
Very much appreciated.

P.S.: I had the same problem with various games, creative seems to be a bit lazy with their drivers.

I think my BSOD is related to the same "sys" file.... didn't think of noteing it down when it happened but I'm sure I saw this file in the BSOD description.

One way to check is to run the game with -nosound parameter.
Hmm good to know. I'll try that tomorrow.

It also happens sporadically but usually when i retry missions. First time was abyss skirmish, 2nd time was campaign final mission and 3rd time was one of the random maps. In all cases it happened after i retried when i lost.

I'm getting BSODs as well pointing to that same driver. It's happening as soon as a level finishes loading.

Creative X-Fi sound card here.

Kamakazie, can you email me at support@rocketbeargames.com please? I may have a fix for you. I'd like to see if it works.
So i've done some testing (6 crashes) and with the -nosound, it doesn't crash, as expected. I do notice that it usually crashes when the songs in the background switch, which was exactly the case with killing floor (except that song looped and it would crash when it was done looping and repeated itself)

Also it never happens in a fresh game. Always in maps that take a while to finish, but on some occasions it didn't happen after retrying a mission, but in a new mission that just takes very long.

I'm fairly sure it's a problem with the openAL driver and the way it handles the .ogg files, but i'm not an expert.

System information:
- Amd XP dual core 5000+ (nonoverclocked)
- Nvidia GeForce 9600 1GB LE.
- 2gb Ram @533 mhz
- Windows XP 32 HE SP3
- Creative audigy Live! Soundcard.

I'm about to release a patch today - it contains a way to bypass the sound driver. Let me know if you still have issues once 0.704 rolls around.
That seems to have fixed it right up :D Been playing nonstop for over 4 hours with a break for dinner, and by now it should have crashed at least twice, yet it didn't :)

Great work ^^

Sorry I didn't get to reply to you, I forgot to sub to this thread so I didn't know there were any updates! Good to hear the latest patch might have fixed the problem.

Hey ROCKETBEAR!
I am having the exact same problem with the Game Amnesia The Dark Descent. Im talking same BSOD with Same File name. Can you explain what you did in that Patch you gave Cyriel -SB Beta? It might be able to fix this game too! The developers and Creative seem to have dropped the ball on support for this issue. THanks!

I just switched the OpenAL library from the Creative one to this one: http://kcat.strangesoft.net/openal.html

You should be able to just overwrite the openal32.dll to use it.
