Can't create new saves (planetary campaign)

Somehow I've gotten the game into a state where I can't create new saves. I can still overwrite old ones, at least most of the time. The problem persists even if I start a new campaign, or if I exit and restart the game. My computer is not out of storage space. Screenshot

I am playing using a MacBook Pro running OS X 10.11.6.

How many save files do you have in total? There's a theoretical cap, on Steam Cloud saves, but I can't imagine anyone hitting it.

What happens when you try to save?

See the screenshot linked above. When I try to save, I get a message from the game -- "Warning. Something went wrong! Failed to save the game."

In the folder "~/Library/Application Support/Steam/userdata/53318783/204530/remote/", I have 3 autosaves and 147 named saves (the highest is profile1_dc_save147.lua). The total size is 9,998,744 bytes.

However, there are only 142 entries for named saves in profile1.xml. profile1_dc_save10.lua and four others are present in the folder but not listed in profile1.xml.

In the Steam "Properties" window for Infested Planet, the Updates tab says "9.54 MB stored / 1.23 KB available". Unchecking the box "Enable Steam Cloud synchronization for Infested Planet" does NOT fix the problem; I still can't create new saves in-game.
