Error when launching game: Failed to initialize steam API

All's in the title.
I get an error saying:

Infested planet error

Failed to intialize steam API. Exiting.

when launching the game.

Edit: checked for crashlogs in appdata/local and base directory, none.

I'd try restarting your PC and then verifying the game install. That error means that the game tried to interface with Steam and failed.
