First is based on a coin flip for who plays first. For things like battles, whoever played the battle card gets to hit first.
While it may feel like 1st is crazyily over powered, 2nd has actually shown to have a higher win rate. You'll get use tot he feel after a while.
Going second is better if you play a defensive deck, usually something with good weapons like Linza or Morvran. Play armor gain in the last slot in every chapter to boost survivability. Since you act *last* before the final duel, you could play something like Highwayman or Kalphite Emissary to guarantedly grief your Rival out of weapon.
