can't return to fullscreen, neither reconnect
My pc isn't that good, but on lowest setting everything runs pretty smooth, however sometimes my screen freezes, and after a few seconds i'm sent back to the desktop with a message from win 7: "the video driver AMD has stopped working and has been succesfully restarted"(or symilar, i have the messages in another language). this happens even in browsing session so i'm in no way balming the game, drivers are updated blah blah blah... however afterward if i click on the icon the game fails in returning to fullscreen, while the sounds are still palyng as normal. If i press alt+enter a window appears but is empty and leads to nothing, leving me only to the alt+f4, witch forced me to forfeit the game i was in, unable to reconnect even if i restarted the game instantly after.
So i'm addressing to two issues:
1)being able to return to fullscreen after a disturb(normaly works just fine) tech specs if you want a bit of context: inspirion n5010 pc, ATI Mobility Radeon HD 5650 integrated ghraphics card, intel i5 m520 processor
2) not countng closing the application as a forfeit, so i can reconnect if this happens again
hoping for an answer, in the menwhile i'll play windowed

[edit] ok, had problems in windowed too: the screen becomes white, i can still do action but i have to play blindfolded, resulting in another forced forfeit, if there're any solutions i would be galdd to see them

Sounds like the Timeout Detection and Recovery is triggering (essentially the GPU does not respond within a certain timeframe, and is reinitialised by Windows Display Driver).

A few things for you to check:

Chronicle is known to cause some GPUs to run rather hot, so you may want to check temperatures (especially with your system being a notebook). Apart from making sure all the vents / heatsinks are relatively dust free, ensure that VSync is turned on when in game. This'll cap your FPS at refresh rate as the GPU isn't working harder than it needs to. Without VSync, the GPU will be pushing as many FPS it can without limit.

Another issue could be that the game is not running on the correct GPU. Sometimes Chronicle is not detected correctly as a high performance application, and just runs on the onboard instead of dedicated. To fix this, you can follow the steps here: http://www.pcadvisor.co.uk/how-to/pc-components/how-set-default-graphics-card-3612668/

You can also attempt to reinstall the redist, located in Steam\steamapps\common\Chronicle\Chronicle_Data\Redist

To take some strain off the system, you could also disable Windows Aero. Set the theme (under right click -> personalisation) to Windows 7 Basic. Should free you up some resources when playing - you can always switch Aero back on afterwards.

As a last resort, you could also modify your registry to increase the Timeout Detection value. It's up to you if you wish to try this:

  • In Start menu, type regedit and hit enter.
  • In the registry editor, select HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\GraphicsDrivers
  • Now the next steps depend on whether or not you have a 32 or 64 bit version of Windows. If you have 32 bit, go to Edit - > New -> DWORD (32-bit). If you have 64 bit, go to Edit -> New -> QWORD (64-bit)
  • Type TdrDelay as the name, and hit enter.
  • Double click the TdrDelay and add a value of 8 for the Value Data, and hit Ok.
  • Restart the computer.

Probably should have found and posted a link instead of typing all that... but better late than never: https://support.microsoft.com/en-gb/kb/2665946

Many thaks! This particualr kind of laptop tends to overheat especialt in the gpu, eventualy i'm do some cleanibg to the fan maybe, not sure how much it would help however, I'm asking it too much. I kinda knew alrady about the increase timeout option, but i tought that it would only have made the screen freeze for longer, i should have left vsync on, silly me, thinking that mindless uncheking would have helped, i've moved the ati slider to performance, i hope that will help other games too, never knew something lke that existed!
Tanks also for the hard work of typing this XD, apricciated!
