Blademaster timing?
When do Blademasters decide to attack? Is there any consistency? All the other monsters follow specific rules, but Blademasters seem surprisingly random.

In the Bestiary, the "Blademaster" tutorial gives the Blademasters one timing, the same as a Green Slime, but the "Patterns" tutorial gives them a different timing, attacking 2 beats early. I tested it in the level editor too, and those Blademasters always attack 2 beats too early. Some charts like the hard chart for Under The Thunder combine these two timings, so Blademasters sometimes appear like they're synchronized, but then you have to hit them several beats apart.

If the Blademaster behavior is arbitrary, can we configure it in the level editor? Can we combine their attack distances the way they do in "Under The Thunder" to create misleading unreadable patterns, which force the player to react?

you can change when the blademaster attacks by RIGHT clicking their attack position to move it with the move tool. left click moves the timing position where you actually press the key to hit. if that makes sense.

they always attack one beat after they unsheathe their sword
Blademasters can attack from any distance on the board, but have a one beat delay to unsheathe their sword before striking, accompanied by a very loud and distinctive audio cue.
If you know what column they're in, and in some songs what order a number of them appear in, you don't even need to keep an eye on them and react to their motion, you just wait for the audio cues.

And yes, the level editor allows you to customise how far back Blademasters strike from.

It's not random, it is always one beat after they draw their sword. Their position on the lane does not have anything to do with when they will attack (some swordmasters will draw their sword really far away, and some won't draw until they nearly hit the beat bar), it is purely based off the visual and audio cue.

Guys, the issue is that there is no clear rule for when they draw the sword.

That is their gimmick, you need to react to it. It often lines up logically with the music, so you can anticipate it 99% of the time, but they occasionally fall on beats you don't expect, so you still need to rely on your reactions.

The only hard and fast rule which I don't think I've seen an exception to is if there are multiple swordmasters on screen, it will always be the one that is closest to the beat bar that will draw their swords first. I don't think I have ever seen a swordmaster behind another one draw first. If there are multiple on the same beat, you will need to rely on the visual cue to see which one you need to hit.

Thanks! I didn't realize you could adjust their timing with the move tool. I understand their gimmick better now, I'm glad they let us use it in the editor too
Suddenly, I discovered that blade masters aren't always 1 bit delayed from their sword is raised. https://youtu.be/aXGCWH__XYw?feature=shared

Here is clear, that both of them are a bit off, and it ruins the challenge of coda + remix.

update: the blade masters wait for a player's input, so they move either earlier or later. In Coda mode it confuses when one misses the timing, because then they wait extra tick.

They do wait for the player's input (or the half-a-beat window)... VISUALLY. Their hit sound still entirely adheres to the beat.

The same happens with any other monster - when you miss even just a Skeleton, their hit sound plays right when you need to hit them, followed half-a-beat after by their attack sound.

So yes, traditionally it's okay to say that Blademasters attack exactly 1 beat after they unsheathe their sword.
