I ran into the problem where launching KotOR II would result in an immediate game crash. After poking around, and stumbling onto a couple of things, I came to realise that the problem was that I have my Steam client set to use Proton Experimental by default, and there is a Linux-native version of KotOR II. So what was happening was that Steam was downloading the Windows version of the files, and then trying to run them through Proton and failing. Once I set Compatibility to force "Steam Linux Runtime", it immediately started behaving correctly (well, after a hard reboot of the system, anyway). Might be an obvious thing, but I'll leave this here, just in case the solution doesn't immediately occur to someone else.
