I'm getting the same error message. Are you running Windows 8? That's the only thing I can think of that might be causing this error.

How do you start the game in windowed mode? I can't even get a menu -- nothing but a black screen with the windows task bar at the bottom.

Try setting compatibilty to win 7 and run as administrator... on file RCR.exe in ...steamapps/common/rollercoasterrampage. I have win 8.1 64-bit and got the same problem as you before. Hope it helps...

Thanks for the report. Many copied of RCR have been distributed and usually run fine, but I understand there have been some reports of d3d errors.

There are a few things you can try.
1: Update your drivers to non beta version:
2: Restart your machine (I have seen simply restarting clear d3d errors).
3: Run it in windowed mode.
4: Set compatibility to win 7 and run as administrator.

I have Windows 7 Home 64 bit and have run Roller Coaster Rampage in Free Ride and Campaign mode with no errors at all. You could try a defrag of your hard drive, get rid of any junk files you may have, make sure there are no viruses, and turn off any unneeded programs running in the background. If these don't work, try reinstalling the game or go to the game properties - local files tab - verify integrity of game cache.

Running windows 7 64 here, with no issues what so ever. Pretty cool game.

Uninstalled, drivers are up to date, its in admin mode, and on win 7 compatibility, and tried again, still getting the same error. Anything else i can do, or have i lost money?

Same problem here unfortunately. Have Win 7 64 with latest drivers. Tried compatibility modes. Game runs menu and then just sits there saying to push A to start. X box controller(s) work on every other game in Steam and otherwise so pretty sure it's not them. Tried installing direct X that comes with the game install files. Tried windowed mode and full screen. Makes no difference. Does anyone know a start command to manually start the game in a true window? Can't find one on the net.
It's my family PC, not my personal one but it still plays all the latest games albeit with a few bells and whistles turned off these days.
