One option that has been discussed is the option to show only your stats. I don't know if this is officially part of the plan or not.
In GR1 there was room reserved at the bottom of the screen for the stats.
In GR2 the track fills the screen. So putting the stats at the bottom would hide a lot of the track unless you reduced how much of the screen the track could use.. With today's monitors being much wider than the old CRT screens, putting them to the side as an overlay makes more sense.

I think a good solution would be to be able to choose where on the screen to place the information, in some tracks you would want them on the right, in others below, or half on the right and half on the left; this could be chosen during the editing phase of the track and saved on it. While racing it is hard to understand where the corresponding indicator is... if it took on the color of the corresponding runner it would be good. This is like thinking out loud hoping it is useful
