How To Recover Your Save From Local Backup
Update 1: You can also now open your save and backup folder by going to Help -> About CivIdle -> Open Save Folder / Open Backup Folder. Here's a step by step guide: Step by step guide: https://cividle.com/images/recovery.png

Update 2: Sometimes a corrupted save can cause account rank loss. To recover your account rank, you should first rank up your account to Quaestor, and then recover your progress from a backup

Your progress is synced with Steam Cloud - however, under exceptional situations like power loss or crash, the data might fail to sync. In this case, you can attempt to recover from a local backup.

Your local backup for CivIdle is here
%AppData%\CivIdleLocal\<Your Steam ID>\CivIdle_*
An example looks like this:
C:\Users\<Username>\AppData\Roaming\CivIdleLocal\<Steam ID>\CivIdle_*

* is 1~10 are the 10 backups. You can sort them by date modified to pick the latest one, if that is too new, you can pick the second latest one and so on,

Your Steam Cloud progress is here
%AppData%\CivIdleSaves\<Your Steam ID>\CivIdle
An example looks like this:
C:\Users\<Username>\AppData\Roaming\CivIdleSaves\<Steam ID>\

You should find two files in that folder: CivIdle and steam_autocloud.vdf

You can copy your local backup (CivIdle_X, X is a number 1~10) to Steam Cloud progress folder and rename it to CivIdle. If there's already a CivIdle file in your Steam Cloud progress folder, delete it first.

Steam ID>\CivIdle

The file path on the 2nd entry is incorrect, it's actually %AppData%\Roaming\CivIdleSaves\<Your Steam ID>\CivIdle

%AppData% on WIndows maps to X:\Users\<YourUserName>\AppData\Roaming

I used to just close the game with the X on the window. Then I realised there was a hard to find "save and quit" option. First time I used it I lost my save...

The recovery process didn't work for me. I have 10 saves, 10 minutes apart, but the oldest one is still after everything vanished. I closed the game at the time, but it appears it kept on making backups for 1.5 hours after that, overwriting the real backups.

How do you do this?? I rename the backupfil, so it has this same name and put it in the other folder, but it will not work, it just create a new save.
The two file is also not .log only the one tha the game load fron, not the those in the backup folder. So i also tried rename it with .log but still the game creates at new file. :-(

Amazing! it worked!

I just tried to use this method to NOT lose an entire night's progress AGAIN. I had a connection timeout just five minutes ago on the "connecting to steam" part and it skipped the offline production. I tried to re-load the old backup from last night and it did the same thing, just without waiting on a response for as long.

In short, this does not seem to help at all with the most common issue, the server for some reason not checking the offline production.

How does this work for Linux? I found the appropriate folder but don't see any saved games. And I can't find a way in the game to bring up the "About" window you show in the linked image, nor do I see a way to save a game. Thank you for any help with this.

Thank you. I simply could not find that, and even with your suggestion, I thought that must apply only to Windows version. I finally found it, thanks to your help.

Is there a way to save a game without quitting?

The game is saved in the process automatically
