Basically, if a save (manual or auto) was made partway through a task, that task will, more often than not, be basically freaked up when you load that save. And there seem to be nothing to do about it except loading an earlier save. Lesson learned: savecum and hope that at least one semi-recent save is not in the middle of a task.
