My Mercenary Kings kept crashing and I couldn't figure out why until Windows finally told me Defender was blocking the app from auto-saving to its normal location. After allowing it through, the game doesn't crash anymore. Check defender settings for "Controlled folder access" to see if Mercenary Kings is being blocked there. Hope this helps someone.
