1. Don't ask for help on a full server. Remember that typing instructions and tips takes time away from playing. Upper level players sometimes just want to play and have fun.
2. Don't ask for help on Official servers as they tend to be a cess pool of noobs and noob farmers
3. Try and join Classic Duel servers - This is an open FFA map and not duel mode. It is usually ran by a clan where etiquette is in order and you do not fight without a bow from each duelist. These are open maps of high end duelist and they are usually very happy to give advice and help.
4. Try and find private servers with just a few people playing, preferably high ranked players, be nice, make friends, then ask for help
5. Try and find Clan servers, add them to your favorites list and play there often as you will make friends and they will teach you. Maybe even join one and they will school you up.
6. Try and find servers/clans with TeamSpeak or other VIOP service because talking is faster than typing. Also download and install TeamSpeak or Ventrillo, be prepared and get a Mic.
7. YouTube and Google is your friend. There are literally hundreds of Chiv tutorial videos along with the Dev's fourms and even here, Reddit and http://forums.tornbanner.com/forumdisplay.php/37-Tactics-and-Tutorials?s=&pp=20&daysprune=-1&sort=lastpost&order=desc
I also teach on my server when it is slow. Just last night I was teaching noobs how to fight 2 v 3+ and when they are out numbered by dividing the enemy and target switching while using combo attacks. Sometimes I will broadcast on twitch.tv So if you have decent ping to my server here is my info.

I occasionally stream live gaming on http://twitch.tv/sirretsnom typically broadcasting nightly between 6pm - 11pm CST and sometimes on weekend.
If I get a lot of players that want to learn I will reactivate my TeamSpeak or Use Clay's TeamSpeak because VIOP is faster than typing instructions.
Good tips--the input is appreciated!
Play the in game tutorial.
Then play it again hitting all the stages. Then play it again as by the 3rd time you play it you should blow through it fast. Pay attention to weapon timing, drags and feints in the Advanced section.
Place priority on unlocking weapons.
This should take about a month of play. The best and fastest way to do this is to pick one weapon and play on FFA servers until the next weapon is unlocked then play that weapon till the next is unlocked. I would start with Vanguard as that is the most noob friendly. Then go through knights, MAA and archers last. There are reasons for this, just trust me. Stay focused and don't switch classes even if you die a lot. What this will do is expose you to the strength, weaknesses, range, damage and speed of all the weapons against all the other weapons. No weapon is better than the other really, in the right skilled hands any weapon can kill another.
Parry and defense.
A lot of players struggle with parries and feel that attacks are going through their parry unfairly. An example is that you are holding your shield and you have an overhead clearly miss you but then it does damage. This is called a waterfall and it is a Z pattern overhead that is going around your parry/shield in a Z pattern and the end of the swing is actually hitting your legs or feet, thus doing damage but in first person looks like a miss or feels like it went through your parry.
There is a lot to the parry system and how players get around parries and shields. For visual details on how it works and what it actually looks like by creating a game with a bot and in console type Showcollision. You will see a large white box floating in front of all player models. This is the parry window that is activated when you press parry and is an active shield timed with the parry animation and deactivated after then animation ends. Same is true with shields when being used. It is the same size and timing for all weapons. You will also notice that it is directional an crouching gives you better protection as well as looking up.
So how do I use this knowledge? And how do I get better?
Knowing the size and timing of the parry window, you can now see how you can use footwork to get around it and delaying your swings so that the parry deactivates before your swing makes contact resulting in a hit.
The best way to practice parrying is to first create a game with a bot and practice parrying against different weapons. Once you get confident, add more bots. This will get you familiar with P2P or Parry into Parry and being able to parry more than one person. Once you get comfortable against 5 or more bots, now it is time to step up the game. Join a FFA server, your mission is get better at parring so your rules are you can only parry and kick. Do not attack! You will die a lot at first and it will confuse the ♥♥♥♥♥ out of other players. Once you start to only focus on the parry, you will get better at reading feints, accelerations and slow down drag attacks. Then punish them with a kick and do a taunt laugh at them. (heheh) Do this for at least a full gaming session and then a round or two for the next few days and your parry skills will increase dramatically.
Then the bastards ruined it by putting it on the loading screen telling everyone what it actually did. Gone are the days where you could make an entire server implode all at once during a steam sale or free weekend.
I would have a sugestion:
It would be possible to create something like a "Chivalry Academy" FFA Old Duel server?
I mean a "go to" place where every veterans who are willing to teach and the noobs searching someone to learn from/ ask for advice/combat practice with, would join, anyone else not searching any help or offering to teach would be sent out?
I bet that, if there was a dedicated gameserver like that it would be filled with people, veterans offering to help, and the noobs searching for guidance and advanced combat insights.
The server would be advertised with a sticky topic here in the oficial CMW steam forum, or even in this very own topic, that way everyone who is asking and searching for help would find it.
Less people would give up on the game, if having a place where they could openly get practice with friendly and helpfull experienced veterans, on the medium to long term the game and community would retain a much higher % of the newcomers waves.
The idea is not an original of mine, we used to have that in my country's Jedi Knigh 2 community, many years ago. and it worked, the community academy training camp used to form lots of noobs into advanced players who otherwise most likely would get frustrated of constantly geting wrecked in the servers and call it quits.
