Steam UI not loading when started from Dash/Search
I recently ran into some permissions issues with the Flatpak version of Steam, particularly in the recently released game recording feature. To get around that, instead of mucking around with Flatseal, I installed Steam from RPM Fusion. While that solved the permissions issue, I noticed that the Steam UI doesn't launch when starting from Dash/Activities/Search. Steam itself launches, but the UI doesn't. When I start it from the "Software" application, the UI boots right up as expected. I assume that the issue is with the command that runs when the shortcut is ran, but I have no idea a) where to find that, b) what the command is, and c) what the command should be/the difference between it and what is ran when starting from "Software".

Has anyone else ran into this? Does anybody have a work around? Is it better to run the Flatpak version of Steam and adjust permissions for game recording?

Thanks in advance for any help/insight!

Edit: I just realized I didn't post any relevant system details. Whoops.

  • OS: Fedora 41
  • DE: GNOME

I never touched Fedora of the like, but... Might it use some steam.desktop file, that perhaps sets some environment variable? We saw such problems in other distros. You could do a search for "steam.desktop" on your system. (With the locate tool or whatever you prefer.)
