Steam for Linux

Steam for Linux

External Storage (HDD)
Hello,

I should start by saying that I'm a complete toddler when it comes to Linux, so if there is a solution in the comments, please explain it to me like I'm 5 and a half. Much appreciated.

Whenever I boot up Steam, I can only see my 'Local storage drive', the one where I have my Linux installed (SSD). I have a separate HDD specifically for games and everything else. I've installed Steam games there, but as I stated, whenever I log into Steam, I manually need to add the HDD.

Is there something that needs to be done? Previously I made the HDD my 'default' storage drive for Steam, but it lasted until the next boot-up.

Thank you in advance for any sort of guidance.

Which Linux (Ubuntu, Mint, ...) are you using and do you happen to know which Desktop environment (KDE, Gnome, Cinnamon, ...)?

Whatever it is, you might be able to start gnome-disk-utility. It might be the case that your disk is not automatically "mounted" on boot.

Like I'm five: Your main disk, the SSD, is the house where all your games are. The other one, HDD, is a big box. When you start your system, the box is closed, so you need the penguin ("Linux") to waddle there and open it every morning automatically.

In addition to partitioning, formatting, and mounting the drive, steam also needs permissions to access the drive.

I prefer to set ACLs for this, but my gut says most people just chmod 777.

As for persistence, you need to add the drive to fstab file. There are plenty of guides and videos out there on how to add a drive to your fstab file
